This college basketball season continues to surprise – let’s get in a mini-recap!

Very little movement at the top of this ranking; the top teams seem to have really settled into place over the past ~3 weeks. The only movement in the top ten was from #10 WEST VIRGINIA, who took it on the chin this weekend at #46 Oklahoma. That 5-10 group of teams, from Gonzaga to WVU, is all pretty tightly bunched, so it’s easy to rise and fall within that group, and the Mountaineers went from the top of it to the bottom of it this week. This is a massive week for WVU, as they’ll play Kansas and Baylor back to back in what my formula thinks will be the two most important games of the whole week.

One of the week’s biggest shocks came from #19 MARQUETTE, who moved into these rankings last week but are now part of everyone’s rankings after their beatdown of #23 Butler on Sunday. #12 Seton Hall is running away with the Big East, but Marquette now finds themselves in a cluster of 7-4 teams with Villanova and Creighton, tied for second.

Two teams re-entering the top 25 this week, starting with #20 HOUSTON. The Cougars delivered the weekend’s most surprisingly lopsided result, destroying #33 Wichita State by 33 points on Sunday and sit all alone in first atop the AAC. The other team moving back into the 25 is #22 NORTHERN IOWA, who have won five straight and whose loss at #141 Southern Illinois looks better every day.

#27 IOWA is one of the teams moving out. The Big Ten is just a bloodbath this year, and #47 Purdue is probably the most confusing team in existence, so it wasn’t too surprising that the Hawkeyes dropped this game, but it was very surprising to see them limp out of West Lafayette with a 36-point defeat. The other team dropping out is #29 ARKANSAS – I’ve been high on the Hogs all year, but they lost to #127 Mizzou this week after having dropped the midweek game at home to #8 Auburn.

Notable unranked teams include #31 Rutgers, #34 Illinois, #35 Memphis, #39 Virginia, #42 Michigan, #43 USC, #45 Wisconsin, #50 Stanford, #53 Arizona State, #62 Minnesota, #68 Saint Louis, #82 Washington, #104 UCLA, #113 North Carolina, #127 Missouri, #131 Murray State, #166 California, #234 Illinois State, #257 Evansville, #341 SIUE and #343 SEMO. Full rankings are available at thebracketbot.com/rankings, where I keep them updated (almost) every day.
